How to Prime an Eberspächer Fuel Pump: A Step-by-Step Guide
Meta Description: Learn how to safely prime your Eberspächer diesel heater fuel pump. Avoid common mistakes, clear air bubbles, and fix starting faults easily.
Introduction
If your Eberspächer diesel heater is clicking but failing to start, or showing fuel delivery fault codes, it is highly likely that there is air trapped in the fuel line. Introducing fuel into a dry system or clearing an empty line requires priming. Here is a professional step-by-step guide to safely priming your Eberspächer fuel pump without damaging the internal components.
Why You Should Never Use a 12V Constant Power Source
Before starting, remember a critical rule: Never connect your Eberspächer fuel pump directly to a continuous 12V battery. These dosing pumps operate on brief electrical pulses (clicks). Constant 12V power will quickly burn out the internal solenoid coil.
Step-by-Step Priming Protocol
  • Step 1: Check Your Fuel Connections
Ensure all fuel line joins are tight and secure. Air leaks are the most common reason fuel lines drop their prime. Ensure the fuel standpipe in the vehicle tank is properly positioned.
  • Step 2: Disconnect the Heater Supply Line
Disconnect the fuel line where it enters the heater unit itself. Place the open end into a small container or bottle to catch any discharged fuel during the process.
  • Step 3: Pulse the Pump Safely
To trigger the pulse action safely, you have two professional options:
    1. Using a Diagnostic Tool: If you have an EasyStart Pro or a controller with a workshop/maintenance menu, navigate to the component test section to trigger a built-in pump priming cycle.
    2. Using a 12V Pulse Tool / Manual Method: Use a manual pulse button tool, or tap a temporary 12V wire repeatedly onto a battery terminal (tap on, pull off, tap on, pull off) to simulate the clicking pulses.
  • Step 4: Watch for Fuel Flow
Continue pulsing until you see a steady stream of diesel exit the hose into your container with zero air bubbles remaining.
  • Step 5: Reconnect and Reset
Firmly reattach the fuel line to the heater body. Clear any stored fault codes on your digital controller and attempt a standard heater start sequence.
